What you teach at NDDD

I teach the ISTD DDE Tap teaching qualification to the College students.

Previous Credits

I worked as a Musical Theatre performer on several Cruise Ships, Pantomimes at the Birmingham Hippodrome, UK tours and Regional productions of Copacabana and Hello, Dolly. My last professional engagement was in the Broadway revival of production of 42nd Street in Stuttgart, Germany.

Upon moving into teaching, I became gained my Fellowship status with the ISTD in Tap and Modern Theatre, was appointed a grades examiner in 2015 and joined the tap faculty committee and teaching team in 2017.  I am also qualified with the IDTA, NATD and BBO and was awarded Qualified Teacher Status in 2010.  I gained an MA with Distinction from Middlesex University focusing on teacher training in the vocational sector.  I have taught at Bodyworks Dance Studios, Arts Ed, Sylvia Young and the Urdang Academy.  I was Director of HE Programmes at Urdang until 2018 before going freelance and I now run the part-time DDE course in London.

Career Highlight/Most Memorable Moment

Dancing in 42nd Street was a dream come true because it was the first musical I had seen in the West End when I was 9 years old. However, my biggest highlight in my career was being awarded a PhD in Dance in 2018 from the University of Roehampton, proving that dance as an academic study can be taken seriously. 5 years of intense study allowed me to follow my dreams and meet some of the last remaining dancers from the Hollywood Musicals of the 1940s and 1950s.

What you like most about Teaching?

I love passing on skills and information, particularly in terms of training tap teachers, to a new generation and to get students to start thinking more broadly about the subject/s that they are you studying.

There is something quite special about the time in a studio with the students, it’s fun to explore and be creative and to watch students reach their goals.  I also learn from the students and that is a very important part of teaching for me.

What type of Teacher are you?

Open and honest, with a touch of sarcastic humour.  I can have a tough exterior but will always be fair and expect the same level of commitment from everybody.

Previous Training

Growing up the Midlands I studied locally whilst completing my dance examinations.  After a year at MADD college I was offered a 3-month contract in panto in Birmingham and from there I went from contract to contract.  As a tap specialist I have trained on both sides of the coast in the USA, and make regular trips to continue to further my knowledge and work with master tap teachers such as Brenda Bufalino, Debbi Dee, Ted Levy and Professor Robert L. Reed.

Top 3 Morals

1. Turn Up

2. Be Present

3. Be Prepared

Your one piece of advice!

Don’t take your training for granted, it will be over before you know it and it’s too late to go back.  Treat every class as though it’s your last and get everything you can out of it.
